Young-sung Kim
For my second artist I chose Youn-sung Kim, a Korean impressionistic painter. Kim’s works seek to explore the consumerism of our world, and try to identify the intrinsic values of the many things within it. Born in 1973 in Seoul, Korea, Kim tries to incorporate some of his own views of culture and values into his paintings.  Aside from the beautiful details in his work, I find the titles unique. All of his works are titled [Nothing. Life. Object], and something about that really fascinates me. Most artists who do such intricate work also have a title that says something about the work. These titles also say something about the work, but they speak more to the intent of the artist than the physicality of the pieces. Kim has also had his work in multiple exhibits and solo shows.

All works are oil on canvas and are titles [Nothing. Life. Objects]

  1. Im really impressed by how realistic her paintings are. It took a closer look to realize that the fish in the cup was a painting and not a photograph. Very cool!

  2. I think because his paintings are so hyperrealistic and that he uses the same title for each piece that gives no further description for the work is so mysterious. I love this about his work because it forces us as the viewer to really think further into what we are looking at.

  3. She must put alot in her painting to make it seem very photographic. I thought they were all pictures at a quick glance. Maybe that what she is going for towards her concept of consumerism. Also, these paintings don't seem that impressionistic to me. More like realistic with a bit of classical techniques.

  4. I can't even imagine the time and patience it must take to put out such detailed work! I'd like to pick his brain about his process with all the meticulous bits.

  5. The realism in these is absolutely astounding! At first I was convinced they were photographs, but after really close observation, I realized that there are tiny areas where paint texture is visible.

  6. I love how realistic these paintings are, they are absolutely spectacular. The frog is my favorite one of them, because of all of the bumps, ridges and highlights.
