Omar Ortiz

Born in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico in 1977, Omar Ortiz started his art career as a Graphic Designer. After graduating from a Design for Graphic Communication program, Mr. Ortiz found himself drawn to hyperrealistic oil paintings in 2002, and has been painting ever since. One of the most considerable influences, as his teacher, to his work is the painter Carmen Alarcon. He continues to dedicate himself to his work. Predominantly featuring the human figure coupled with full textures and vibrant fabrics. I was drawn to his work for the amazing detail, and the amazing skin tones he achieves. Mr. Ortiz has stated that he greatly enjoys “the challenge of reproducing the skin tones with natural light and the nuances it gives us, particularly in bright environments”(Ortiz). Mr. Ortiz has had his work in many exhibits, publications, runs seminars on hyperrealism, and sells his speciality skin pigment mixtures. Below I will show some images from his oldest published paintings, as well as his newest. I would highly recommend taking a look at his website to see the amazing artistic transformation he has undergone. All of Omar Ortiz’s work can be found at his website at: http://www.omarortiz.com.mx/

  1. On top of being really great at mixing skin tone palettes, Ortiz also handles texture masterfully. You really get a sense for all the wrinkles or smoothness of the skin as it contrasts with the environment.

  2. The variance in whites in the last painting of the figure on the couch in the landscape is stunning! I think the cross composition, and limited use of red draws the eye into the figure instead of getting lost in the whitescape behind. Great work on compiling your images, listing the image information, and also your description of the artist's interest in skin tones. How did you encounter this artist?

  3. The first painting with the fabric is very beautiful, because its so simple, yet has so much detail. I like it.

  4. It's interesting that he was originally interested in Graphic Design instead of painting. Especially, because his works are so hyperrealistic I would just expect to see his painting style being more of a Pop Art style, but this paintings are so beautifully composed and detailed.

  5. I love the design choice. I like how vibrant the colors are, and the expressive of the people particularly of the couple.
