Young-sung Kim
For my second artist I chose Youn-sung Kim, a Korean impressionistic painter. Kim’s works seek to explore the consumerism of our world, and try to identify the intrinsic values of the many things within it. Born in 1973 in Seoul, Korea, Kim tries to incorporate some of his own views of culture and values into his paintings.  Aside from the beautiful details in his work, I find the titles unique. All of his works are titled [Nothing. Life. Object], and something about that really fascinates me. Most artists who do such intricate work also have a title that says something about the work. These titles also say something about the work, but they speak more to the intent of the artist than the physicality of the pieces. Kim has also had his work in multiple exhibits and solo shows.

All works are oil on canvas and are titles [Nothing. Life. Objects]

Botond Kuti

Botond Kuti is the Son of successful artist Kuti Denes. He is a Hungarian artist from Transilvania born in 1984. He attended a fine arts high school. His art has a loose realistic style to it. He often uses high contrast that pushes the figures forward. He doesn’t fully finish the figures and will just leave an outline or a suggestion of an outline. The bodies he paints all have a very strong sense of weight to them when looked at. I personally really like the way Botond has a high contrast in the piece of the couple laying together. He brings a contemporary take on an old style of painting which is something I’ve tried to do in some of my past pieces.

Daniel Sprick

Daniel Sprick was born in Arkansas in 1953. Daniel went all over the place for school. He attended Mesa College in Grand Junction, CO in 1973. Then Ramon Froman School of Art. Followed by the National Academy of Design in New York, NY in 1976 and finally got his BA at the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley, CO in 1978. Now he currently lives in Denver working in his apartment studio. He most recent work focuses on the diversity of people. His subjects included the homeless, obese, skinny, ill, black, white, asian, pretty, ugly, old, and young. Each painting was pushed to the extreme with Sprick’s skill in realism. However this series is different from his previous realism paintings. Sprick’s portrait series is an exploration of abstract realism. All the faces are extremely realistic and immediately draw the eye in but as the eye moves farther away from the face, places like the hair and body are noticeably abstract and are more suggestive. Daniel Sprick’s artwork is wonderfully technical and the subject matter is strong as well.
I chose Daniel because he’s the first professional and nationally known artist I met. He and his art left an impression on me. He was incredibly nice and not snotty like the rich art buyers there to meet him for their own street cred. He was kind of shy and spoke more through his art than he did in his talk. I, being a fan of realism ever since kindergarten drawing animals that started with whatever letter we were learning about that day, was amazed seeing someone who had the skills like a renaissance artist. It inspired me to try to improve as much as possible in technique. I hope now I can start experimenting with suggesting shape rather than creating the whole.

He currently has work in the Denver Art museum.

Francis Lisa Ruyter
Francis Lisa Ruyter is an American born artist raised in Maryland. Ruyter is known to use paint and permanent marker to recreate images from photographs that he takes. By working from his photographs, the artist is successful in capturing the intimate angles for which many of his works are known. Ruyter's process involves transferring his photographs onto surfaces and resolving them into line drawings, resulting in semi-abstracted, two dimensional renderings of the subjects, \\the final product being a balanced mix of synthetic and realistic imagery. I find some of his pieces to be a little hectic due to the intense neon colors and often busy composition. My favorite works that I have seen of his are the ones in which he uses slightly more muted colors and are less packed with straight lines and geometric shapes, a good example of this is the painting titled Marjory Collins: Washington DC. Dancing class at an elementary school.

Recent exhibitions include: the Macedonian Museum for Contemporary Art, Athens; Museum der Moderne Salzburg; Kunsthalle Krems; Kunstbuero, Vienna; Kunsthaus Graz; Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg and the Museum of Modern Art, Ibaraki Japan.

REMINDER Greenhouse and Museum Visit this week

Hi Class,

You will only need your sketchbook, pencils, eraser, markers, or other dry media for this week.

You do not need to bring your models to class as we are not painting in class this week.

I wanted to remind you all that this week we are going to the Biology Greenhouse on Monday. We will meet at class before walking over.

Wednesday, please meet at the the UNM Art Museum (located in Popejoy hall) at 5:30. PLEASE ARRIVE 5-10 MINUTES EARLY IF POSSIBLE. DO NOT BE LATE. We want to be respectful of the curator's time who will be showing us around after hours. After the visit, we will be looking at some images in the classroom.

Agnes Martin

Molly Zimmer

Agnes Martin was a Canadian born abstract painter. Her painting style spawned out of her experimentation with abstraction which led her to the minimalist style she is known for today. Her paintings are large, usually 5-6 feet on each side, and comprised of 1-3 paleluminous colors outlined in grid pattern. The grid is drawn with graphite pencil and often times fades away near the borders of the canvas making the lines both indistinguishable from far away and to seemingly float in space. The light pastel-like colors engulf the lines from far away creating a richness to the paintings. The softness of her colors is accentuated by the opaque white gesso that is the starting point to all her paintings and never gets completely covered up. Neither do the pencil marks that create a unified, repetitive structure the closer you get. The longer you look at the lines the more your eyes start to contort and change the painting. All of these elements add up to a painting that’s meant to evoke feeling internally in a personal way.

"My paintings are not about what is seen. They are about what is known forever in the mind"
